Bought a boxer from a "backyard breeder" I guess you could say?

Monday, June 28th, 2010

I paid 0 for her. She was 10 weeks old when I got her. They gave me a shot record (she had all of her shots at that age and gave me the empty vials so I could bring them to my vet) and let me meet the parents and the other sibling they kept from the litter. She was dewormed twice, vet checked and they made me fill out a form with my contact information in case they found out any genetic disabilities or issues that might come about. They also reply to emails I send with pictures and seemed like all around good people. I drove 6 hours to pick her up from Virginia. She seems very healthy, very energetic and she’s absolutely gorgeous. But I’m hearing bad things about buying dogs from breeders like that. I know I should have rescued one but I couldn’t find any that would suit me, trust me I searched everywhere and when I saw her picture I had to get her. The people seemed reputable.. the other dogs seemed active and well fed. They were outside dogs, they had huge cages and they had huge fans on them since it was kinda hot outside. The father was absolutely loveable and seemed to be very happy. And the other pup was fat and adorable. My dog is slightly skinny, which I was a little worried about but I’ve had her almost 2 months now and she’s growing BIG but still skinny. Vet says she looks good, it’s the breed. More muscular type. Any advice would be helpful and any signs of bad breeding I’d love to hear. Thanks!

Should I leave my dogs outside during the day?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

I have three dogs, a four year old chocolate lab, a two year old boxer and a one year old aussie cattle dog mix. I currently leave the lab and boxer free inside while we are at work during the day and the aussie kenneled. I am wondering if and how I can switch them to being outside during the day. I am also curious on how hot is too hot and how cold is too cold (I live in North Carolina). Are there any websites I can go to to find this information? Or would it be best to call my vet and the get the information? Since I’ve never left them outside unsupervised, what should I be aware of, such as health risks and the like? I can’t seem to find a lot information on this subject so if you know of any websites, that would be great. I already know to have adequate shelter and water (no food, they are on a schedule)…but since I’ve never left them unsupervised outside, I’m kind of in the dark here.

Also, my boxer is white, should I worry about sunburns?

Question about special nutritional requirements for a Boxer. Expert advice please!?

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I have a 5 1/2 month old Boxer puppy. He is my first boxer. I did a ton of research about the breed before deciding to get one. However, I may have underestimated the information I read about how bad of gas that boxers generally have. It is so horrible that I cannot even stand to be in the same room most of the time. I am a cattle rancher, so I am lucky to be able to bring and have my dogs with me pretty much all the time. I just can’t stand to be in the house or truck with him because of his gas.

I read that the severe gas is due to Boxers having a little bit different digestive system than most dogs and something about Boxers having different .. or more enzymes in their stomachs. That is the most I have been able to find out on my own.

I’m hoping to find out a little more about the specific nutritional requirements for Boxers. I would think that there is a specific diet that you could put a boxer on to help them digest without so much gas. I am willing to try my hand at a homemade raw diet. I have done a raw diet for a cat before. I just have not been able to find any free information about a specific diet for Boxer dogs.

Right now, I am feeding him a food called "Taste of the Wild" that I buy from our local coop. I buy this food because it has the highest level of real meat products, and absolutely no corn or grain fillers. It is the highest quality of dry dog food that I have been able to find. It even has more real meat and less filler than the mega expensive foods that my vet sells. Yes… I know that all dry dog food is pretty lousy for your dogs, but it is the best I have been able to find so far.

Any help on reducing his horrible doggy gas will be great and information about Boxer nutrition will be much appreciated.
